Der Schödersee auf 1440m Höhe ist der einzige periodische See im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Zur Zeit der Schneeschmelze oder nach starken Regengüssen bildet sich im Schödertal ein mehrere hundert Meter langer und breiter See. Im Sommer versiegt dieser und es bleibt nur ein kleiner Bach übrig, der am Ende zwischen den Steinen verschwindet und unterirdisch weiter fließt.
Vom Parkplatz beim Talwirt bis zum Schödersee führt die Wanderung immer entlang des Bachs (interessanter Elementar-Naturlehrpfad), bis plötzlich das Rauschen verschwindet. Ab hier verläuft der Bach unterirdisch. Weiter geht es über Wiesen, bis plötzlich der See auftaucht. Wer Lust hat, kann von hier aus zur Arlscharte aufsteigen. Nach einer ausgiebigen Sonnen- und Plantschpause treten wir den Rückweg an. Hier besuchen wir noch kurz den Kreealmwasserfall, der sich neben dem Weg befindet.
